POLL: The 4400 Concept That Would Change The World?

by Alexandra on February 22nd, 2008

The 4400's Shawn, Tess, Richard and Jordan

We have a new poll, and I need your help!* The 4400 series has its own unique concepts which demonstrate ways to save our world.

If there was only one concept that could save the world, which one would you choose?

Here are some choices and examples:

Health and Welfare

The whole purpose of The 4400 Center is to help people become more of what they are, and in that, they become healthier, and smarter. Perhaps Jordan’s concept of promicin was right, and could save the world.

Environment

Jordan Collier’s demonstration of cleaning up the what is supposed to be the worst river in the country was another example of cleaning up the environment. Even the terrorist attack that caused the desert area to be made fertile in an earlier season was an excellent example of making our environment better.

Politics

The lesson of The Marked is a great point for reasons why checks and balances on government are important. Add to this the lessons of the inhibitor scandal, which clearly shows it can be dangerous when certain entities have too much power over your health care.

Scientific Advancement

When Maia and the other children were taken from their time, and seeded back into different timelines, this caused some major scientific advances that otherwise would not have occurred, at least not yet.

Were we to learn the lessons from one of these choices, we could theoretically solve that issue entirely.

What single 4400 concept would you choose to save the world?

It really does not matter anymore because the show is canceled and I don’t think it is coming back.

You may be right, but a lot of people still love the show, and it might matter to them. :)

I think science would take care of the all those other ones.

I’d go further in describing the political implications of the show in saying it not only has important lessons for domestic politics, as you rightly pointed out, but on a larger, historical and international scale. At the heart of The 4400, is the message that there are no absolutes of perfect good or inherent evil — that we are all equally human and equally capable of both kindness and cruelty. The show could easily have depicted terrorism as always emerging from irrationality, but Ira Steven Behr (as he notes in his episode commentary) gave the Nova Group good reasons and reasonable means of achieving their ends through violence. The show could easily have made Jordan Collier a complete hero or a complete villain, but history shows that even our most revered leaders and most despised enemies are complex human beings, of whom we should be wary, but also ready to join in unity. My vote is for politics! Great poll, Alexandra.

I’d also add that the show rightly points out that conflict among groups and nations doesn’t emerge from some inevitable clash between good and evil, but differing peoples with different interests and, therefore, perspectives. It’s there in the conflict between various 4400 factions, between Ryland, fearful P negatives, and the federal government and the feared 4400, and between all the characters on the show.

Muldfeld those are great points. I wish more people realized your last one. Differing perspectives are at the heart of all human conflicts.

Thanks, Alexandra. I just wish all those sci fi viewers (who seem to care only for Heroes-like action and suspense) and TV reviewers had recognized that and realized how special this show, and Ira Steven Behr’s work, have been in this depiction. I truly believe, as you seem to, that The 4400 is educational and positive entertainment that can help with positive cultural change and understanding. It does what all great art should do.

I think NTAC has a good reason for seeing Gordon as an enemy.

Gordon’s vision is on the border of Criminalistic.

It’s not moral to temptate humanity with the Promicine (so it will be heavens on earth), and the result may be genoside, but on their free will.

Courage and hope are not a good reson to die !

A leader has to take responsabilty for his people , and Gordon knows that roughly 50% of Promicine takers will die.

Gordon said it will be a generation sacrifice. Well. .. Words cannot wash his hands clean off the blood.

    I know it’s Sci-Fi TV, I’m with Sean’s way.

I really wish they would bring the 4400 back. I don’t really watch t.v but I always stopped to watch the 4400 it was a great show it always kept me enthralled wondering what was going to happen next. I think I will just switch of the giggle-box (t.v) now.

If the government could test Isabelle to see if she could take promicin, why can’t they test everyone, rather than let people dice with a 50/50 chance of dying if they take promicin? Seems to me they don’t want to save lives, they want a population to give them power.
