Kaj Eriksen’s Haunting Role of Jeremy
Kaj Eriksen (aka Kaj-Erik Eriksen) is best known for his role as Danny Farrell in The 4400. I had the opportunity to watch an episode of Boston Public the other day, and although I’d seen quite a few of them during the shows’s heyday, I’d never seen Kaj in the role of Jeremy. Here’s a brief synopsis of the episode, called Chapter 20, along with some observations.
In the role, Jeremy is a student who has some trouble at home. For most of the episode, you don’t really know what’s wrong. One of the teachers, Marilyn, sees that although Jeremy is an exceptional student, he’s having a bit of trouble. She begins to suspect that Jeremy’s mother is abusing him. The mother, portrayed by Kathy Baker, denies it, and seems outraged that Marilyn is getting so involved, by questioning her and Jeremy. Marilyn even stops by their home to make sure Jeremy is OK.
Jeremy finally reveals to the Marilyn that his mother locks him in the basement, for hours or (days?) at a time. “Oh it’s not so bad”, he says. “I Get food and stuff. It’s just to remove all distractions so I can study”. Marilyn tells the principle this disturbing news, and he says they can only involve the police if they have absolute proof. At some point, Jeremy’s mother reveals that she was brought up the same way, and it’s not enough to just tell your kids to study.
At the end of the episode, you see that Jeremy’s mother is baking sugar cookies. Jeremy sits in the dark, in the basement, with a glassy-eyed stare. This episode reminded me of the book and movie, Flowers In the Attic. Kathy Baker was perfect for this as well. It was a good role for Kaj, and we’re looking forward to more of that intensity.
